Every time my family tries to get together, it feels like coordinating a minor military operation. We are scattered all over the map, so when my mom decided to come to town, it turned into a full-blown reunion. My niece and her family flew in from Missouri, my mom and her best friend drove down from Seattle, and my nephews came in from Medford and right here in Bandon.
With a group that size, finding a place to stay that actually works for everyone is usually a nightmare. But my mom ended up booking a place called the Salty Sand Dollar through visitbandon.com, and it turned out to be the absolute perfect setup.
The biggest lifesaver was the layout. My mom has been dealing with some health issues lately and navigating stairs is a real struggle for her right now. The house has bedrooms, a bathroom, and a whole second living room right downstairs, so she could just relax and enjoy herself without constantly fighting a flight of steps. At the same time, the house is so new and nice that even though it easily handled our big crew (or would be perfect for a group of golf buddies), it wouldn’t feel awkwardly huge if it was just a couple staying there.
We spent a ton of time just hanging out. We bought a massive haul of food and cooked almost every meal in there, which honestly felt better than trying to crowd a restaurant table with a group our size.
When we did venture out, the location was unbeatable. It’s super close to town, and there’s beach access right there via the Devil’s Kitchen park. My niece and her husband spent hours down on the sand and in town at the docks crabbing.
The absolute highlight, though, was up on the second-floor deck. My niece's husband, Michael, was looking out at the waves and noticed something out in the distance. Everyone gathered around and got to watch a group of whales spouting water in the ocean. It was an incredible experience.
The whole trip just reminded me how much better it is to deal with real people when you travel. My mom booked everything with Sam, the property manager. She still hasn't stopped talking about how nice he was. If you’re looking to plan a trip down this way, definitely skip the massive corporate rental apps and check out visitbandon.com instead. Finding a place with that kind of space—and that kind of local hospitality—made the whole weekend.
